Ahsoka Tano Reaches Out Through Falling Snow — Print & Oil Painting

The hand arrives before the face does. It is thrust straight at the viewer from the left of the frame, foreshortened so hard that the palm is nearly a circle and the five fingers splay outward from it like spokes, and the artist has left it in deep shadow: plum and burgundy, with no detail inside the silhouette at all.

Behind it, at the right, Ahsoka's face is small and precisely painted. The white markings are picked out over the brow and under the eyes, the eyes themselves are a pale grey-blue, and the expression is neither warm nor hostile. She is looking down the line of her own arm.

She is dressed for cold in a heavy hood ringed with pale blue-white fur, painted as thousands of separate fine strokes radiating outward, and the striped tips of the montrals and head-tails push out through it on both sides.

Everything else is empty sky: a flat wash running from white at the top down into cornflower blue, with soft snowflakes scattered across it at several sizes to build depth out of nothing. There is no ground, no horizon and no other figure.

The picture is built entirely on that one gesture: an open hand held out at arm's length toward whoever is looking, which in this galaxy can mean stop, or come here, or something considerably less negotiable.
