Anakin Skywalker's Face Splits Into Darth Vader — Print & Oil Painting

A single vertical band of white light runs from the top edge to the bottom, and every other decision in the picture follows from it. The left half is one man, the right half is what he became, and the seam is placed so exactly down the centre of the face that one eye belongs to each.

On the left: loose hair, a scar cutting down through the brow, a heavy Jedi tunic with the collar folded across the chest, and a leather sleeve at the wrist. All of it is lit cold, in steel blue and grey, against a background of drifting nebula in cobalt and violet. The expression is tense but entirely human.

On the right: the helmet, painted with a red sheen sliding down the cheek panels, the grille and the eye lenses picked out in black. The chest control box carries its bank of switches, the shoulder mantle sits square, and the cape falls in one heavy slab. Behind it the sky has been set on fire, cloud lit from within, with sparks rising through it.

The join is best at the waist. The two halves meet at the belt, where a gloved fist on one side and an armoured gauntlet on the other are folded together as if they were still one pair of hands, and a thread of blue lightning runs along the buckle. A small pale crest sits centred at the very bottom edge, quiet enough to read as a signature.

Because both halves are given the same height, the same shoulder line and the same amount of light, the picture refuses to treat the second as a monster and the first as a victim.
