Bespin duel Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker — Print & Oil Painting

The boldest piece of design in this group. Almost the whole canvas is a single wall of machinery drawn flat and graphic: a grid of blue-violet panels, pipe runs, and hundreds of small indicator lights in regular rows, closed top and bottom by two long curved bands. No atmosphere, no modelling, no visible brush. It is built like a printed sheet.

Into that wall the artist has cut one narrow gantry, black and silhouetted, running out from the left just above the midline. Two figures stand on it, neither of them more than a fraction of the canvas height: a taller one on the left with a cape falling from the shoulders, and a smaller one on the right with an arm raised.

Between them sits the only warm event in the picture, a burst of magenta and white where the blades meet, throwing short radiating spikes into the dark and staining the panels pink for a short distance in every direction. Every one of those hundreds of little lights is cool. That single hot point is where the eye goes and where it stays.

On the right a heavy black column and a horizontal arm hang across the wall and crop the scene, which pushes the two figures further into the left half and makes the space around them feel far deeper than a flat treatment should allow.

The duel this refers to ends with a revelation and a very long drop, and the composition has already made both of them inevitable: a shaft with no floor in it, and two people standing on a plank in the middle. Our Star Wars collection sets it before the later confrontation at the Emperor's throne.
