The child is asleep, and the entire picture is organised around not waking him. He is carried high against her chest with his head turned in and his eyes shut, both ears folded down and back, one clawed hand curled up near the chin and one bare foot showing below.

She is seen in profile with her chin lowered, looking at him instead of out at us. The hair is pulled back into tight braids on one side with small orange beads threaded into them and left loose at the nape, and a small dark teardrop is inked on the cheek below the eye.

Her kit is a soldier's and it is still half on. An olive shoulder plate over a white sleeveless shirt, a leather guard on the forearm crossing the bottom edge, the strap of something heavier below that. None of it is polished and none of it matches.

Two lights work against each other. Warm gold arrives from behind her shoulder and rims the cheek, the jaw and the crown of the child's head, while everything else stays the cold teal of a ship's interior, pushed so far past focus that a bulkhead, a doorway and a standing figure survive only as soft blocks of colour.

She came out of the Rebellion as a shock trooper and is the least sentimental adult anywhere in that part of the story, which is precisely what makes the pose land. Part of our Star Wars collection, next to the same woman painted upright and armed and the man who usually does the carrying.
