Orange and White Clone Helmets Rest on Forest Stakes — Print & Oil Painting

The third treatment of this ground, and the one that lets the colour speak. A line of helmets runs from the lower left corner into the upper right on a long diagonal, alternating orange and white, each one mounted on its own thin post driven into bare brown earth.

The nearest is the largest and the most fully painted: a deep orange dome with white markings sweeping back over the crown, a pair of white shapes on the brow, the sides scuffed to reveal the pale shell beneath, and two dark circular fittings low on the faceplate. Beyond it a white one, then orange again, then white, the sequence continuing until the sixth or seventh dissolves in the haze at the right edge.

The setting is woodland. Tall pale trunks stand in a grey-green fog behind the row, close-packed and stripped of detail, and the canopy above has been reduced to a flat wash. Nothing moves. There is no figure anywhere in the picture and no evidence that anyone has been here recently.

Placing them along a diagonal rather than in a straight rank is what turns the image from a record into a walk: the eye is made to travel down the line one marker at a time, at the pace of somebody who set them there.

The two colours are two units. White with blue trim for the legion, orange for the company inside it that repainted their helmets in tribute to their commander, and both are planted in the same soil at the same spacing.
