About this artwork
The weapon is pointed at you. A multi-barrelled rotary blaster is held at the centre of an upright canvas with its muzzle cluster turned directly out of the picture, foreshortened into a ring of dark holes, and a cold blue charge is already glowing at the breech. Everything else in the composition exists to frame that ring.
The trooper holding it fills the lower two-thirds of the frame, braced with the stock jammed against his hip and both arms locked around it. His plating is filthy, scraped, chipped and streaked with dried dust, and it is drawn with a hard technical line, every strap, buckle, magazine pouch and vent given its own contour before any paint went down.
Two more stand behind him at the edges, half a pace back, their helmets angled outward to cover the flanks. One carries a pale sigil on the shoulder plate. All three wear the earlier tapered helmet, and all three have been weathered to the same grey-green.
The light is a hot golden dust that fills the entire background and eats the horizon completely. There is no ground, no sky and no structure, only glare, with fine particles suspended in it and the figures cut out against the brightest part of the canvas.
Aiming the barrel out of the frame is a decision with consequences. It puts the viewer at the wrong end of the picture, and it turns a study of three soldiers into a study of what standing in front of them feels like.
