Darth Vader Looms Over Captured Prisoners Aboard His Ship — Print & Oil Painting

Two scales in one frame, and the gap between them is the entire content of the picture. Vader occupies the left half from the knees upward, close enough that the mask alone is larger than any other head in the image. The prisoners are at the lower right, at perhaps a third of his apparent size.

His right hand is raised in front of the chest with the fingers curled inward and held apart, caught partway through closing. It is the most carefully painted passage on the canvas: every crease in the leather, a cold blue highlight along each knuckle, and a small shadow under every fingertip. Nothing is being touched.

Below and behind that hand, two civilians kneel on a floor wet enough to reflect them. A dark-haired woman in a blue jacket and red skirt looks up and off to the side; a bearded man in a long grey coat kneels beside her with his head turned away. Neither is bound. Two troopers stand over them with rifles held across the body.

The interior is stated economically: grey wall panels, a run of ceiling strips throwing hard verticals down the left, and at the right a large circular viewport with the pale limb of a planet in it. Everything sits under a cold blue-green cast, and the only warm colour in the picture is the small block of indicator lights on his chest.

The mask carries a long specular sweep down the dome and across the cheek flare, which is the artist's one concession to glamour in an otherwise clinical image. From our Star Wars collection, alongside the same gesture completed and another prisoner held at arm's length.
