About this artwork
The figure has his back to us and is painted as a flat black shape with no interior detail whatsoever: helmet, shoulders, cape, and a shadow pooling out towards the viewer along the floor. Not one highlight has been allowed onto him. He is a hole cut in the middle of a very pale picture.
What he is walking into is the subject. Ahead, the passage opens out and the far wall has been broken through: a wide irregular gap floods the upper centre with cold white light, and beyond it there is only glare and drifting particles. The eye finds that opening first and the silhouette standing in the way of it second.
Both sides of the passage are wreckage. Angular slabs lean in at hard diagonals, plating has been torn back, and among it on the right a console is still working: a small block of red and white indicator lights and one lit screen, the only saturated colour anywhere in the canvas. Fine white flecks fall through the whole scene.
Everything else is held inside a narrow band of blue-grey and pale cyan, with the contrast pushed almost entirely out to the two extremes: the glare, and the silhouette. Painted this way the image has no middle ground and no face, and the character is reduced to an outline the viewer recognises anyway, which is more or less the brief that mask was designed to.
