Darth Vader Looms in a Blood Red Haze — Print & Oil Painting

The same character and the same colour taken to the opposite extreme: full-length, dead centre, standing perfectly still inside a fog of red. Where the companion piece hid him at the edge of a frame, this one puts him in the middle of the canvas and lets the smoke do the work.

The blade is ignited and held down and away to the right, drawing one straight bright line from the fist to the lower corner. It is the only clean edge anywhere in the picture. Cape, shoulders, helmet and belt are all softened by atmosphere, and the light bleeds outward from the blade in a wide diffuse glow that stains the smoke pink around it.

There is no cool colour in the image at all. Red fills the background, red rims the mask, red pools in the folds of the cape, and the deepest blacks are simply where the red has run out. That decision costs the picture its depth of field and buys it a great deal of pressure instead.

The composition is close to symmetrical, which is unusual for the subject and makes the figure read as an emblem rather than as a moment. Printed tall, it behaves less like an illustration and more like a standard.
