Darth Vader Leads Stormtroopers Through Misty Woods — Print & Oil Painting

A forest in fog, and one black shape walking out of it. Vader comes down the centre of the canvas at full length, the blade ignited and held low and back so that it trails behind his right leg as a single red diagonal. Everything else in the picture is atmosphere.

The trees are enormous, painted as flat blue-grey verticals with no foliage anywhere in reach, and they are spaced widely enough that the eye keeps finding more of them further back. Ground fog stands at knee height across the whole width. Behind and to either side, stormtroopers advance in loose order, five of them, small, pale, softened almost to smudges by the distance.

The colour is disciplined to the point of severity: teal, slate and blue-black everywhere, with two exceptions. The blade, and the small cluster of red and green indicator lights on his chest panel. Those few coloured squares are the most precisely rendered thing in the painting, which is a very deliberate joke: the most human-looking detail on him is a machine readout.

The arrangement is the argument. He walks well in front; they follow at a distance and never form a line. Nothing in the image suggests they are protecting him, and nothing suggests he has looked back.
