Darth Vader Stands Calm as Troopers Take Aim — Print & Oil Painting

A five-figure group portrait built on a simple contrast: the four at the edges are working and the one in the middle is not.

Two stormtroopers flank Vader on each side, staggered slightly so no two heads sit at the same height, and every one of them has a rifle up and aimed outward: the pair on the left firing off the left edge, the pair on the right covering the right. Red bolts leave three of the barrels and cross the upper corners of the canvas.

Vader himself does nothing. He stands dead centre, both gloved hands closed together at waist height around an unlit hilt held vertically against his body, cape hanging in two heavy folds. The mask is straight ahead. In a picture where four figures are braced and firing, the tallest one is standing at rest, and that is the entire argument of the image.

The setting is a blizzard: pale flat snowfield, no horizon line to speak of, snow blowing across the frame in fine diagonal streaks, and a dark shape half-buried in the middle distance behind the left-hand pair. The white armour of the troopers nearly matches the ground, which leaves the black column at the centre carrying almost all the contrast on its own.
