About this artwork
A tall, narrow canvas in which the nearest object is a glove. Vader's right arm comes straight out of the picture toward the viewer, and the artist has foreshortened it so aggressively that the open hand is painted larger than the mask behind it: fingers spread and slightly curled, the palm turned down, the forearm compressed to almost nothing. It is a gesture aimed out of the frame, and the frame is where we are standing.
Light has been rationed to almost nothing. A cold rim runs along the top of the helmet, the ridge of the brow, one cheek and the crest of the shoulder; below that the figure drops away into black. The chest panel survives as a small grid of red and pale squares, the belt boxes as two dull rectangles, and everything else, from cape to legs to background, is a red-brown darkness with no edge in it anywhere.
The blade is the counterweight, and it has been kept deliberately modest. It is lit low on the left, angled down and out of the bottom corner, held loose and away from the body in the other hand. The picture is not about the weapon. The weapon is what he is not using.
That is the whole argument of the composition. Everything a duel would need is present and idle, while the hand that requires no equipment at all has been pushed into our face. The saber is for opponents; the open hand is for everyone else.
