Din Djarin Holds a Slain Creature Beneath a Full Moon — Print & Oil Painting

Drawn rather than painted: dense crosshatching and fine engraved line throughout, closer to an etching than to a canvas, with the whites scratched back out of the dark. Din Djarin stands with his back to us on a rocky shelf, armoured, cloaked, seen full length. We are given the shoulders, the beskar plates and the helmet from behind, and no part of a face.

In his raised right hand he holds a severed head. It is not a beast from any world in this saga: a long ridged skull, a set of splayed mandibles around the mouth, and a heavy fall of thick tendrils hanging from the crown like braided cord. Luminous green blood runs from it in long threads, down over his gauntlet, and spots the rock at his feet. A tall spear is planted in the ground at the right of the frame.

The staging is pure trophy portrait, and it is deliberately borrowed. A hunter, photographed from behind at the kill site, holding the head up so that the moon behind it does the lighting. That moon is enormous, a pale cratered disc filling the upper centre, with mountains beneath it and a tangle of hanging vines closing over the top of the picture like the mouth of a cave.

Setting one franchise's hunter against another's is an old game among illustrators, and this one plays it straight rather than for laughs: the drawing is serious, the anatomy is careful, and the joke is left entirely to the reader who recognises what is dripping down the armour.
