About this artwork
Nothing in this picture is falling. That is the first thing to work out, and it changes everything about it. Two dozen pieces of machinery, among them cylinders, brackets, coils of cable, a droid limb and torn plating, hang in the air all around her at every distance, and every one of them is drawn with a clean stationary edge rather than a blur. They are being held.
She kneels at the centre-left in profile, sitting back on her heels with both hands loose in her lap, and her head is tipped right back so the throat is exposed and the face is aimed at the top of the frame. It is a posture of surrender or of waiting, and either way it is completely still.
Under her jaw there is a hard line of red light, narrow and evenly lit, running across the front of the throat. It is the only saturated colour anywhere near her and the artist has made sure you find it.
The costume is workwear again: the leather cap and goggles, a dark sleeveless vest over a white shirt with mauve sleeves, a pistol strapped to the thigh, one glove with a red palm. The background is a warm ochre haze with dust suspended through it and no floor, wall or horizon anywhere.
Everything about the arrangement withholds the cause. Something is lifting a room full of scrap into the air and putting a light at this woman's throat, and the picture declines to show what.
