About this artwork
A picture built out of a corridor. Both walls are lined with tall vertical light panels running away from the viewer, the ceiling carries its own lit strips, and the artist has aimed the camera low and dead centre so the whole architecture converges on one point. Everything in the frame is symmetrical.
Standing at that point, in black, is the only unlit object in the image. The Emperor faces us in a heavy hooded robe that falls in deep unbroken folds from the shoulders to the floor, the hood pushed forward far enough to shadow the top of the head. Both hands come out of the sleeves at waist height, thin and knotted, hanging open.
The face has been given all the detail the robe was denied. Sallow, deeply creased, the skin drawn tight over the cheekbones, and the eyes ringed and burning a dull red inside their sockets. It is small in the frame and it is the sharpest thing in it.
A guard stands at each shoulder, a half-step back, in floor-length crimson with the smooth helmet and its single narrow slot. Each holds a slender pike upright, and the two shafts rise on either side of him like the verticals of a frame. Their robes are the only saturated colour on the canvas.
The whole composition is a throne room compressed into a hallway: bright walls, black centre, red brackets, perfect bilateral order. From our Star Wars collection, alongside the looser painted version of the same escort and the single guard studied on his own.
