About this artwork
Inked, not painted. Hard black contours around every object, flat colour dropped inside them, and mechanical texture used for shading, which gives the whole scene the snap of a comics page and lets the artist crowd it far more heavily than a rendered version could manage.
The freighter occupies the lower right, seen from above and ahead, banking gently. From this angle the hull is a broad worn disc: the mandibles opening away at the left, the sensor dish standing proud on the upper plating, the cockpit tube running out to the right on its corridor, and the whole surface ruled with panel lines and access hatches. Blue-white engine light spills along the near edge.
The station sits at the upper left, small, complete and quiet. The artist has drawn it properly: the circular dish of the superlaser set into the northern hemisphere, the equatorial trench ruled straight across, the surface broken into a grid of grey plating. It is doing nothing at all, which is exactly why it reads as heavy.
Between and around the two of them the frame is packed with asteroids at every size and distance, each one outlined and individually shaded. Behind all of it the artist has laid in the most colourful background in this group: a nebula running magenta, violet and deep blue with star clusters scattered through it, and a hard white flare burning just off the station's left edge.
The ship is large and near and the station is small and far, and the picture uses that reversal to put the two objects in the same frame without deciding which one wins. From our Star Wars collection, alongside the station painted on its own in the dark and the view from inside the same ship.
