Grogu Reaching for a Hovering Droid Ball — Print & Oil Painting

A small silver sphere hangs above his head, and the picture is built around the fact that nothing is holding it there. Grit, chips of bark and one larger stone hang at the same height, motionless, lit from the same side. The artist has painted a room in which gravity has been switched off in a circle about a metre wide.

The pose is pure effort. Both arms are up, the near hand open with the fingers curled back, the far hand splayed flat, and the shoulders are pulled high toward the ears. His head tips back and the mouth is slightly open. Nothing about it is graceful, which is why it convinces.

He stands on bare cracked rock at the very front of the frame, and behind him a wall of pale ochre dust climbs the full height of the canvas, blown so soft that the structures inside it survive only as two dark angles at the right. The light source sits low and to the left, throwing his shadow back and putting a rim of white along one ear.

The robe is the same coarse layered wrap he wears throughout the collection, sleeves far too long, the collar rolled thick at the throat. Bare feet, planted wide. Everything about the costume says infant; everything about the hands says otherwise.

His species matures over centuries rather than years, and the strength shown here has been established from the start: the first thing the character ever did on screen was lift a charging animal several hundred times his own weight clear off the ground.
