About this artwork
The canvas is organised around one long diagonal: a ridge of black rock climbing from the bottom left corner to the upper right, with the fire behind it and the two men on it. Nothing in the picture is level, and both figures are fighting on a slope.
They are separated by height rather than by distance. The upper man stands on the crest with both arms lifted straight above his head and the blade held high and back: the full raised guard, the instant before a downward strike. The lower man is on one knee a few paces beneath him, body turned, his own blade thrust out low and to the side. One of them is above. The other is not.
Behind them a fountain of lava rises out of the middle ground and breaks into a wide fan of separate sparks, dense at the source and thinning as it spreads left across the canvas. The light it throws is the only light available: both men are silhouettes, edged in orange along the side facing the fire, with no facial detail offered at all.
The left of the picture holds a structure, a dark angular tower with spires, standing low in the flow and only half legible through the smoke. It is the one piece of built form here and it has been kept deliberately dim. Everything else is rock, ash, and the slow orange veins running through both.
