A great ribbed circle fills the wall behind him and the blade cuts across it on a diagonal. Curve against straight line: the entire design rests on that single collision, and everything else in the frame is subordinate to it.

The circle is both structure and view. A heavy metal ring divided into segments, slotted vents set into the panels, and black space with a scatter of stars showing through the openings. It gives the picture a horizon without giving it a floor.

He wears the black tunic buttoned to the throat with a black glove on the leading hand, and both fists are closed on the hilt, arms drawn up and back across the chest so that the blade travels from the lower left toward the upper right. Green light floods the near side of the face, the knuckles and the front of the tunic, and stops dead at the shoulder.

The face is the surprise. Brows down, upper lip pulled off the teeth, eyes locked on something past the viewer's shoulder. This is effort, not serenity, and the green underlight sharpens every angle of it into something close to anger.

Black clothes and a green blade belong to the last act of the original trilogy, when the character arrives carrying a weapon he built for himself and settles the whole thing by throwing it away.
