Luke Skywalker's Silhouette Glowing in a Dim Hallway — Print & Oil Painting

No picture of the character in this lot withholds more. There is no face, no hand, no floor and no far wall, and almost no colour anywhere. What is left is a shape and a line of light.

Two enormous angular masses in grey-green fill the left and right of a wide frame, tilted slightly toward one another like doors caught halfway. He stands in the narrow gap between them, small in the middle of all that geometry.

The blade extends down and out to the left as a hard green line with a white core, and it is the only sharp edge anywhere on the canvas. Everything else, the smoke, the walls, the figure itself, is soft. The green throws a low wash into the haze around his legs and reaches no further.

He is a hooded column of dark cloth with a single small fitting catching light at the waist. The hood is up and the face is not shadowed so much as absent: there is simply nothing painted inside it.

Keeping him a silhouette is the correct decision and the faithful one. In the story this comes from, the hood stays up and the identity is withheld until the last possible second, and this painting stops one moment before that.
