Luke Skywalker Stands Weathered on Ahch-To's Cliffs — Print & Oil Painting

A standing portrait in which nothing whatever is happening, and the stillness is the subject. The figure is centred, cut at the thigh, facing straight out, both hands clasped at waist height with the fingers interlaced. No weapon is visible. No gesture is being made.

Age has been painted rather than implied. The hair is long, grey-blond and pushed back untidily off the face; the beard is full and shot through with white; the skin is loose at the throat and creased across the brow; the mouth sits in a flat, faintly downturned line. The eyes are the only part of him aimed at the viewer, and they are not friendly.

He wears heavy dark robes: a wide mantle falling from the shoulders in deep vertical folds over an inner garment with a coarse quilted texture across the chest, all of it charcoal and slate, with no ornament and no belt showing. Against the pale sky the whole figure reads as a single dark mass with a face on top of it.

The rock does the rest. Two tall stone masses stand at the left and right edges, close to the picture plane and far darker than anything else, bracketing him like the jambs of a doorway. Between and beyond them the sky is pale grey-blue with low cloud, and a sliver of green slope shows at the lower left. He is standing on an island he chose precisely because nobody would come to it.
