Thrawn Sitting in Thought Between Two Guards — Print & Oil Painting

A triangle, built deliberately. He is seated dead centre in a high-backed command chair with his elbows on the armrests and his fingertips pressed together in front of his mouth, and the two figures standing behind him fill the upper corners. Every line in the picture runs up to that point of steepled fingers.

The hands are the most carefully painted passage. Ten long blue fingers matched tip to tip, the thumbs beneath, the wrists relaxed, held just far enough from the lips that they do not touch. It is a gesture of waiting rather than of tension, and the artist has lit it from the front so that the hands come forward off a chest that stays comparatively dim.

The two behind him share his species, which is the detail that turns the picture into something other than a study of an Imperial officer with bodyguards. Both have the same grey-blue skin and the same red eyes, both are dressed in dark clothing with a heavy strap and buckle crossing the chest, and both are held in near shadow. They are not looking at each other or at him. They flank.

The whole canvas sits in cold blue-green with the light coming from somewhere low and in front. Measured saturation runs past half, but almost all of it is in one narrow band of teal, so the effect is of a room lit by instruments rather than by lamps. The white of his tunic is the only broad pale shape in the frame and it forms the base of the triangle.

The staging is doing the work that dialogue would do elsewhere. He is the one sitting down and the only one thinking, and the two standing figures are arranged behind him as symmetry rather than as company.
