About this artwork
A low-polygon portrait, and the most stylistically radical piece in the collection. The face has been rebuilt entirely out of flat angular facets — no gradients, no blending, every plane a single colour laid hard against its neighbour. It is the vector-poster idiom, and it is unusually well handled here.
The trick with this technique is that likeness has to survive the abstraction, and it does. The narrow bridge of the nose, the set of the brow, the particular way the beard runs into the cheek — all of it reads immediately, even though nothing in the image is drawn with a curve.
Colour is where the piece really commits. The right half is built from lava tones: scarlet, tangerine, cadmium, the whole Mustafar palette pushed to full saturation. Down the left runs the sabre, a vertical column of white and pale cyan, and it splits the canvas into two temperature zones that share almost no colours at all.
Because it is graphic rather than painterly, it holds up at any size and against any wall colour. Part of our Star Wars collection, and the sharpest possible contrast with the soft-shadow hooded portrait.
