Obi-Wan Kenobi Ignites His Saber Over Tatooine — Print & Oil Painting

A full-length standing figure in a dust storm, and almost nothing else. The artist has given over four-fifths of the canvas to weather: ochre, amber and burnt orange laid on in broad translucent passes, with the sun reduced to a pale disc barely holding its shape behind the haze.

Obi-Wan stands in the lower centre, robes torn at the hem and heavy with grit, the outer cloak dragged sideways by wind that is clearly still blowing. The blade is ignited but pointed down and away, held loose in the right hand — a man who has drawn his weapon without yet deciding to use it. Its blue is the only cool colour in the entire image and the artist has kept it small, so it reads as a detail rather than a spectacle.

The texture is deliberately rough. You can see the grain of the brush in the sky and the sand, and the edges of the figure are eaten into by the storm rather than cleanly cut. It gives the piece the feel of something painted from memory in a hot room.

The tall proportion suits the subject: a small figure with a great deal of weather above him. Part of our Star Wars collection, and a companion to the closer Tatooine portrait where the same desert appears at dusk instead of midday.
