About this artwork
Hooded, braced, and lit from the front — this is the most confrontational Obi-Wan in the collection. He faces the viewer square, hood up, one arm crossed low and the other extended, and the blade lies almost perfectly horizontal across the full width of the canvas at eye level.
That horizontal is the composition. Most sabre paintings use a diagonal because it implies motion; this one refuses, and the effect is a barrier. The blade is a line drawn between the figure and whoever is looking, and everything in the picture — the tilt of the head, the set of the shoulders — sits behind it.
The palette is Tatooine at its dustiest: pale gold, sand, bleached bone, with the sky reduced to a hazy pinkish wash and a moisture vaporator ghosting in behind his left shoulder. Against all that warmth the blade is aggressively cool, and the artist has let it throw cyan light onto the underside of the hood and the folds of the robe.
The face inside the hood is deliberately weathered — lined, sun-damaged, the beard gone white at the edges. From our Star Wars collection, alongside the wider desert landscape where he is a small figure rather than a wall.
