Old Luke Skywalker broken Darth Vader helmet — Print & Oil Painting

About this artwork
The darkest and flattest image in this group. Measured brightness sits near a sixth of full and the contrast is the lowest of the fifty, so the picture arrives as a single dim field that resolves slowly. The whole surface carries a heavy grain, as though it had been printed on rough paper, and that grain is worked into the shadows rather than laid over them.
The helmet is held up at chest height and it has been ruined. The dome is burned through and broken open along the back, the mask is buckled and pitted, the surface is scorched to a dull charcoal, and a low red glow comes from inside the shell and licks around its right edge. It has clearly been in a fire, and it is still warm.
Two hands carry it and they do not match. One is flesh, curled under the jaw of the mask. The other is bare machinery: black metal finger bones, cleanly articulated, with the covering gone and every joint showing. That detail is the sharpest drawing in the picture and it is placed at the exact centre.
Above them Luke leans in, hooded, in a heavy brown robe, greyed at the beard, eyes down. The face is turned three-quarter away and given very little light. Behind him at the upper left a break in the cloud shows a cold blue, and the lower right corner holds a dark object on the ground that reads as a discarded hilt.
The arrangement is quiet about something specific: the machinery in that hand is there because the man in the helmet cut the original off. Holding the burned mask with it is the closest the picture comes to making a statement. Part of our Star Wars collection, alongside the cracked helmet painted on its own and another pair of hands holding the same object.
