About this artwork
One face painted twice, side by side, with a column of light between them. On the right, Rey as she is normally shown: lit cleanly, hair gathered up, looking off to the left with her jaw set. On the left, the same face under a dark hood, in shadow, washed with red, the eyes narrowed and the mouth harder.
Between the two heads the artist has run a vertical shaft of white-hot light with a red halo, top to bottom of the canvas: a blade seen end-on, near enough to bleach out its own colour. Across the lower third a second blade crosses horizontally in pale blue-white, and where the two intersect the paint flares into lens haze and streaks.
The colour scheme is the argument, and it is unusually literal: red on the left, cool blue-white on the right, and the division falling exactly between the two versions of one head. The background on both sides is deliberately unresolved so that nothing competes with the faces.
The doubling is drawn from the vision the character is shown of herself: the same person, the same face, the same weapon reconfigured, standing on the other side of a decision she has not made yet. Painting them as a matched pair rather than as a struggle is the right instinct: nobody is winning, because it is one person.
