About this artwork
The armour has been built out of real components rather than invented. A wide flanged helmet bowl sits low over the brow with a crescent crest curving up from the front, a face mask below it in dark red shaped into a fixed grimace, broad laced shoulder guards flaring out over both arms in stacked horizontal plates, and a laced cuirass of the same construction across the chest. A ragged pale grey mantle hangs from the shoulders and has been torn along its lower edge.
The palette is lacquer. Everything on the figure is a deep oxblood red or a black-brown, with the lacing picked out in thin lighter lines between the plates, and the surfaces given a dull sheen rather than a polish. Only the mantle is a different colour, and it is the one soft thing in an outfit made entirely of small hard pieces.
He holds the blade two-handed, hands together at waist height, the red beam running steeply up and out through the upper left corner. The grip is a swordsman's grip rather than a duellist's, both fists close, elbows down, and the stance is square and settled. The blade throws a weak red wash onto the near shoulder plate and onto the wall behind him, and that is the only light the picture has.
The street around him is barely there. Dark tiled roof lines slope in from both edges, a pale wall stands behind him catching the glow, and everything else is mist and drifting particles going to near black at the corners. Measured brightness sits near a fifth. The village is established with about a dozen strokes and then abandoned.
The costume is not a joke at the saga's expense. The design language went the other way first: the helmet that everyone recognises was worked up from exactly this kind of armour, and the films borrowed their swordplay and a good deal of their staging from the same source.
