The capital ship is seen from below and slightly ahead, so its wedge drives up and away from the viewer into the top of the frame and the underside is presented almost flat. That viewpoint is doing the work: the eye runs along the whole length of the hull without ever finding the end of it.

The plating is the pleasure of the piece. Hundreds of separate panels, trenches, vents and greebled blocks are described across the belly and flanks, laid in grey on grey with the faintest warm and cold shifts between sections, and a tall command structure rises far back along the spine. Nothing is picked out in colour. The ship is legible entirely through detail and edge.

Three fighters cross the foreground from right to left, close to the lens and considerably sharper than the ship behind them. Each is a spherical cockpit slung between two flat panels on stubby pylons, and each carries red and white markings around the hub, the only crisp colour on any manufactured object in the picture. Two more are already small against the planet at the upper left.

Three light sources compete here, and none has been dimmed to accommodate the others. A blue-and-white world fills the left edge with its atmosphere lit along the limb; a hard white star burns just above the hull with a long horizontal flare; and a red-magenta cloud opens across the right. The measured saturation is low despite all that, because the ship in the middle of it stays resolutely grey.
