Star Destroyer near Death Star — Print & Oil Painting

Two geometries share the frame and the picture is entirely about the difference between them. On the left, a sphere: grey, cratered with panel lines, its equatorial trench visible and the great circular dish sunk into the upper hemisphere. On the right, wedges: hard, flat, angular, pointed. Curve against edge.

The nearest destroyer runs diagonally across the lower right with its engine bank glowing a low orange, and behind it three or four more recede toward the sphere at diminishing sizes, the furthest reduced to a pale sliver. They are arranged along a single receding line, which turns them into a measuring stick: it takes the whole squadron laid end to end to reach across the station.

A world enters at the lower right corner, blue and white under heavy cloud, lit along its limb. It is the only saturated colour in the picture and it has been placed directly beneath the guns of everything else in it.

Overall the canvas is dark, under a fifth brightness, with a faint dust of stars and a soft nebula wash across the upper right. The artist has lit the sphere from the same distant source as the ships so that everything sits in one consistent, indifferent light.
