A Star Destroyer Emerges From Golden Clouds — Print & Oil Painting

A weather painting with a warship in it. The clouds are the achievement: banked cumulus lit from behind and below in cream, apricot and dull rose, piled from the bottom edge to two thirds of the height, with a cold violet sky and a scatter of stars above them.

The ship comes down through that bank nose first and slightly turned, so the long wedge is seen in three-quarter view from above. The upper hull is a dense grid of grey plating and shadowed trenches, the command tower rises square behind it, and two sensor globes sit either side of the bridge like drums. The lower half of the hull is already lost in vapour.

Scale is established without a single caption. Beneath the bow, six dark fighters cross in loose formation, each one a dot with a bar through it, and to the right three paler craft cut back the other way with their wings opened. All of them together would fit inside one of the trenches on the hull above.

The palette does something clever. Every warm colour in the frame belongs to the sky and every cool one to the machine, so the ship reads as a foreign object being pushed through weather that does not want it there.
