A Wrecked Freighter Rests on a Sunlit Mountain — Print & Oil Painting

Four fifths of this canvas is landscape painting. Green wooded ridges roll back into a warm haze, a low sun sits high on the right and throws visible shafts down across the valley, and the far hills lose their edges entirely. Anyone could hang it as a mountain view and only notice the rest afterwards.

The rest is a broken hull the length of a valley. It lies across the ridge in two main sections with a wide gap torn between them, the near piece nosed down into the slope and the far one canted up against the sky. The planform is a long grey wedge, stepped with plating, carrying two spherical domes on its upper surface and a squared tower behind them.

The best detail is how long it has been there. Grass and scrub have taken the lower plates, soil has drifted against the flanks, and the metal has weathered to the same pale grey as the rock it rests on, so in places the eye genuinely loses the line between hull and mountain.

Scale is given away by two small things. Flocks of birds cross the middle distance as scattered black specks, and on an outcrop at the right edge stands one human figure, no taller than a fingernail clipping, facing the wreck with both arms at their sides.
