A Sandtrooper Fires a Flamethrower Astride a Dewback — Print & Oil Painting

The paint is the first thing you notice, well before the subject. It is laid on thick and directional, the sky worked in long ribbons of chrome yellow, orange and violet that follow the cloud forms, the animal built from short curved strokes of olive and umber. Saturation measures above six tenths, among the highest in this group, and nothing in the picture is a neutral colour.

The mount fills the right half: a heavy four legged reptile with a broad scaled skull, a lipless mouth showing a row of blunt teeth, a dark eye, and a leather harness with reins running back to the rider. Its hide is worked green over brown with the scales suggested rather than counted. It is walking, head low, entirely calm.

The trooper sits high on a saddle rig behind the shoulders, in white armour gone amber in this light, with a shoulder guard and a bulky pack. He has both hands on a heavy weapon with an unusually broad muzzle, braced and aimed out past the animal to the left, and a pale discharge shows at its mouth. His helmet lenses catch the sunset as two orange rectangles.

Behind them the horizon is thin: a line of leaning poles carrying slack cable, a suggestion of low structures, and then nothing but that enormous burning sky. The land is almost an afterthought. All the drama has been put overhead.

Animals like this one were used on the desert worlds precisely because machines struggle with sand and heat, and the Empire took them over from the people already living there.
