A Snowtrooper Stands Guard Beside an AT-ST — Print & Oil Painting

The brightest image in this group by measurement, above six tenths, and it has been built entirely from white, pale blue and grey. A mountain face rises through the mist behind, snow falls across the whole frame in fine flecks, and the ground and the sky meet without any horizon between them.

The guard stands at the right, full length and closest to us. Ridged helmet with the banded visor and the breathing unit, armour plates over a padded suit, and a long dark grey cloak that falls from the shoulders and is being pulled out to the left by the wind. He holds a black rifle across his chest in both hands, muzzle down. That cloak is the only large dark shape in the painting and it anchors everything else.

Behind and to the left stands a walker on two long legs, its cabin turned toward us, guns beneath the chin, green grey markings across the plating and snow collecting on its upper surfaces. A second trooper climbs into the lower left corner, small, rifle in hand, head down against the weather.

Nothing is happening and nothing is about to. There is no fire, no target, no movement beyond the wind in one cloak. The picture is about standing outside in appalling cold for a long time, which is most of what a garrison actually does.
