Rebel Soldiers Battle AT-ATs on the Shores of Scarif — Print & Oil Painting

The viewer has been put down in the sand with the infantry. The bottom third of the canvas is a raw earth berm, and three rebels are worked into it at very close range: one crouched at the far left with a rifle, one lying flat below the crest with a helmet pushed back and a weapon braced forward, and one scrambling up over the top in a quilted vest, back turned, hair loose, already committed to the open ground beyond.

Behind them the beach opens out and the scale changes completely. Three AT-AT walkers stand across the middle distance, the nearest striding forward with its head lowered, and the small dark shapes of running soldiers are strung out between their legs. Palms and a low green treeline close the right side.

The left of the canvas is on fire. A tall orange fireball is going up with sand and debris thrown out in a wide fan, streaks of red fire crossing back the other way. Against all of it the sky stays a bright ordinary blue with white cloud, which is what makes the picture unsettling. It is a beautiful day.

Everything is happening on the same shallow diagonal, from the burning left corner up to the calm right one, and the artist has kept the foreground figures sharp while letting the walkers go slightly soft in the haze. That is the correct hierarchy: the machines are the threat, but they are not the subject.
