About this artwork
A lighting exercise with a head in it. Two sources and no third: a cold cyan raking the far side from behind, a hot magenta coming across the front from our right, and the boundary between them running down the ridge of the nose.
The profile is drawn as one continuous edge, forehead to brow to nose to mouth to chin, and it is kept clean enough that it would survive being reduced to a silhouette on a coin. Nothing crosses it. The hair is swept back tight to the skull with the comb marks left visible in the paint.
Where the two lights meet, the skin turns violet. Where neither reaches, behind the ear and under the jaw, it drops to a deep slate. The eye is a small hot red mark placed exactly where the two fields collide, which is why it reads as the brightest thing in a picture containing several much brighter passages.
The white standing collar takes magenta across its front face and cyan down its back edge, so even the uniform is divided. Measured saturation runs past half, the highest of these Thrawn studies by a clear margin, and all of it lives in two hues sitting on opposite sides of one head.
It suits a character built on opposition, and it flatters the physiology: blue skin and red eyes are already a two-colour scheme, so the artist has lit the whole canvas to agree with the face.
