X-Wings Chase a TIE Fighter Through Desert Arches — Print & Oil Painting

The landscape is the whole reason this works. Three sandstone spans arch across the frame in powdery rust and ochre, weathered thin at the top and thick at the shoulders, and the pale sky visible through their windows gives the picture its only quiet.

Every energy bolt in the image is green, whoever fired it, and that is a colour decision rather than an accident of the fight: green is what red sandstone cannot absorb. Four long horizontal streaks run through the middle of the canyon, two more drop from the upper left, and each one keeps a hard white line down its centre.

The X-wing holds the lower left corner, banking through the gap with its foils open and its four cannon tips lit at the ends. It is painted in chalk white with red flashes on the wings, and it is the crispest object in the picture. Fine dust hangs in the canyon around it and softens everything behind.

The other traffic is harder to read on purpose. A dark maroon craft runs at the centre of the frame, longer in the nose than the standard fighter, a round engine port glowing dull at its waist and one panel turned edge-on. A black hexagonal fighter banks high through the arch, and another sits half hidden against the rock at the right, its wings tilted almost flat.

Flying inside a canyon rather than above it is the deliberate choice of the outnumbered pilot: it takes the numbers away from the larger formation and turns the rock into an ally.
