X-Wings and Y-Wings Cross a Moonlit Sky — Print & Oil Painting

The blue in this painting is the most saturated colour measured anywhere in the lot, and it is used softly: banked cloud in cobalt and teal, a deeper indigo at the corners, and one broad pool of pale light at the centre where the moon sits behind the vapour.

Nothing is drawn in detail. Six or seven craft cross that lit pool as small dark shapes, and the artist has resisted rendering a single panel line on any of them. The nearest is unmistakably an X, foils open, tipped slightly nose down. Behind and beside it run longer, blunter machines with twin nacelles, and two more are already half lost in the cloud at the right.

Scale is done with air. Each further ship is not just smaller but bluer and softer, so the formation recedes through four or five clear steps of haze, and the last of them is barely darker than the cloud it is crossing.

The upper left corner is the only place the sky opens: black, dusted with stars, with the cloud tearing apart in soft lobes. It puts space directly above the weather and gives the flight somewhere to be going.

The slower type in this formation is a bomber built for punishing capital ships, which is why these two designs are so often painted together: one exists to survive the trip and the other exists to make it worth taking.
