X-Wings Strike a Fleet of Star Destroyers — Print & Oil Painting

The picture is composed for density. Two capital ships fill the upper corners, a third and a fourth recede behind them, at least a dozen fighters cross the middle ground, and one explosion is opening at the centre with fragments still travelling outward. Nowhere on this canvas is there a patch of empty space larger than a hand.

The wedge at the upper left is turned belly toward us and painted from underneath, so its whole stern is visible: seven engine mouths glowing a deep infrared red, hull greebled in dark grey, the tower barely showing over the top edge. It is the largest single mass in the frame.

Against it, at the right, sits a very different design. A rounded grey hull with a blunt prow, banks of pale blue engine ports along the stern, blistered and organic where the Imperial ships are all flat planes. Two shapes drawn from opposite drawing boards, put in the same frame to be compared.

The foreground belongs to a single fighter, cropped by the bottom left corner and seen directly from behind, its four engine bells burning the same red-pink as the explosion beyond it. We are flying in its wake, which is what pushes the whole battle back into the middle distance.

Space itself has been painted a dull maroon rather than black, and that decision is what unifies the picture: every hull in it, Imperial or otherwise, is lit by the same red.
