X Wings fighting AT AT on Hoth — Print & Oil Painting

We are looking down. The viewpoint sits well above the battlefield and tilts forward, so the snow plain fills the frame from bottom edge to skyline and every machine in the picture is seen from above its own roofline. It reads like a reconnaissance photograph taken from a great height.

Three walkers cross that plain in loose echelon, the nearest large enough to count its hull plates, the furthest reduced to a pale grey outline in the haze. Their heads are turned in different directions and the leading one is firing, but at this angle the machines mostly register as slow, top-heavy and very exposed.

The snow is where the violence is. Six or seven impacts are erupting across the field in columns of dirty orange fire and brown debris, each with its own shadow on the ice, and the drift patterns between them are worked in blue-grey with wind-scoured rock breaking through.

The fighters attack in a shallow dive. One is cropped by the lower left corner with its engines streaming yellow flame, and another crosses the right of the frame at close range, foils open, red squadron flashes on the hull, four exhausts trailing hot gas. A single figure in dark armour stands on a rock at the lower right, watching, entirely alone.

The Alliance never actually flew this type in that battle: the ice was defended by low-altitude speeders with tow cables, and putting fighters over the walkers instead is the painting arguing for the war it would rather have shown.
