Space Marines Battling Orks in a Ruined City — Print & Oil Painting

A city fight organised as one long diagonal. The line of contact runs from the lower left corner up to the right edge, orks on the near side of it and red-armoured marines massed on the far side, and both ranks have been packed so tightly that individual figures dissolve into a texture of shoulders, muzzles and banner poles.

Depth comes from the architecture. Gothic towers rise on both sides into a brown haze, a lit spire stands far off on the left, and the middle distance opens into a slot of pale light between the ruins where a marine with a jump pack is crossing above the rubble. The further back anything sits, the more of it the dust has taken.

Bolter fire is small and constant, little white flashes scattered through the right half, none of them large enough to count as an event. The only cold note in the picture is a teal flare at the centre of the canvas, placed almost exactly where the two forces meet.

What this painting understands about the setting is that nobody in it is a protagonist. There is no duel to follow, only two masses grinding into each other in a street that used to belong to somebody.
