Link Faces a Crimson Storm Above a Swamp — Print & Oil Painting

The canvas divides into two unequal parts that disagree about colour. The lower two thirds are cool: green-teal water, olive reeds, tan cliffs receding into mist. The upper third is violently warm, a crimson sky torn open by pink and white lightning, painted in wet swirling strokes that press down against the rock.

Knee-deep in the water at the right of the frame, he has his back to us, dressed in a green tunic and a long pointed cap with blond hair showing beneath it. He is small against the cliffs and he is not reacting to the sky. Both hands are raised in front of him, cupping a small round object that glows warm gold, the only warm light anywhere below the storm.

In the water ahead of him a large fish lies half out of the shallows, its long snout and one orange-red fin breaking the surface, its eye open and visible. Around it dozens of thin stakes stand up out of the water in a rough grid, each ringed by its own ripple.

The paint handling is soft everywhere, edges blurred, no line work at all, so the scene reads as remembered rather than witnessed. It sits in our Zelda collection. Young Link playing his ocarina in a sunbeam sets a similar gesture in warm light, and Hyrule Castle beneath a fiery red sky shares this weather.
