Hyrule's Light World Rendered in Cross-Stitch — Print & Oil Painting

Every pixel here is a knot of coloured floss pulled through woven cloth, and the maker has let the weave stay visible between them. The grid is never hidden. Look closely and the fields are not areas of green but hundreds of small crosses in four or five separate greens, each sitting in its own square of fabric, slightly raised, catching the light along one diagonal.

The geography is faithful enough to navigate by. Woodland fills the upper left; a brown massif of stepped cliffs and bridges takes the top; the white walls and moat of the castle sit at dead centre with roads running out of it in four directions. A sand-coloured maze occupies the lower left, a blue lake the lower right, and a river joins the two in one unbroken line of pale and dark blue.

What lifts it above a copy is the edge. The stitched land stops in a ragged coastline instead of a rectangle, so the country floats on bare cream cloth, and along the bottom the maker has added banks of cloud that belong to no game screen at all. Three dark birds are worked into the sky above, at a scale the map itself would never allow.

The overworld is the Light World of A Link to the Past, the half of Hyrule that stays sunlit while its twin curdles. Putting it in thread is a quiet joke about resolution: a format built out of squares, remade in a craft that has always been built out of squares.
