About this artwork

Read the tree as a building and the picture opens up. The mouth is a doorway with a raised threshold; above it two horizontal timbers run across the trunk like the rail of a gallery; the eyes sit under a brow that overhangs them the way a cornice does, and the roots at the base flare into buttresses.

The palette is one colour with the volume turned up and down: yellow-green everywhere, gold where the sun lands on the grass in front of the door, olive in the foliage, deep bronze in the hollow of the mouth. There is no blue anywhere in the canvas and no red.

A small white bird is in the air just left of the doorway, wings spread, painted with a soft halo around it so that it glows slightly against the bark. It is the only white in the picture and the only thing moving.

He stands at the lower left in green with a sword and shield on his back, small, side-on, looking across at it rather than at the door. The whole scene is arranged around a moment of distraction on the threshold. Part of our Zelda collection, near the waterfall beside the same tree and the blossom-crowned entrance.
