About this artwork
Three black arrows are lodged in the shield, and they are the most informative things in the picture. They have gone in at three different angles across the face of it, one high, one through the middle, one low with the fletching still visible, which means somebody was shooting from cover and kept shooting. None of that happens inside the frame.
The shield itself is a long blue kite, iron-rimmed and riveted, with a gold Triforce painted at the centre and dull red wing markings spreading behind it. He has it across his body and slightly angled, and it takes up nearly a third of a canvas that is twice as wide as it is tall.
Everything he carries has been thought about. Over a quilted green gambeson he wears a fur mantle on one shoulder and an articulated steel pauldron on the other; a recurve bow and a bundle of fletched arrows ride behind the back; a small bottle of something blue, a red glowing sphere and a dagger hang from the belt. The right arm is coming up and back with a longsword whose blade leaves the top of the frame.
The forest behind is nearly white, pale trunks in fog with no detail at all, which throws every warm colour on the figure forward.
