Link Climbs the Fire Temple's Glowing Stairs — Print & Oil Painting

A staircase set dead centre in one-point perspective, rising away from us, with everything else arranged symmetrically around it. That rigid geometry is what gives the scene its formality. This is an approach, not a fight.

He stands at the foot of the steps, back turned and very small, in a red tunic with the sword out in his right hand and the shield slung behind him. The red of the cloth is the same red as the fire ahead, so he is already wearing the colour of the place he is walking into.

The upper half is one great wash of orange and gold. Two dark totem-like pillars flank a lit gateway at the top of the stairs, three smaller mouths of flame burn beneath them, and behind all of it a wall of heat blows the detail out completely. Embers drift down through the whole canvas as hundreds of loose orange dots, dense near the fire and thinning as they fall.

The foreground answers in cold blue-grey rock, roughly blocked in at both bottom corners, and that cool frame is what makes the gold read as heat rather than simply as light. A single white spark sits on the steps halfway up, marking the middle of the climb. From our Zelda collection, near Link facing a giant Goron in a lava cave for the other side of that mountain.
