Zelda in Profile, Crowned Against the Dark — Print & Oil Painting

The background is flat black with a faint warm bloom behind one shoulder, and nothing else. That emptiness turns the portrait into an inventory: every object she is wearing has to carry its own weight, because there is nothing else in the frame to look at.

Start at the crown. It is not a band but a row of upright tapering teeth in worn gold, each pricked with small dark holes, closed at the temple by a blue-green stone and answered by a second curved ornament further back. The hair is deep auburn rather than blond, parted centrally, falling straight past the shoulder.

Two long cords hang down her chest, bound in alternating bands of cream and rust and finished with metal points, and between them sits a gold pendant with a fan of teal feathers. A heavy pauldron of scrolled gold on dark leather rides the left shoulder, and at the bottom edge a white glove closes around something we are never shown.

She is in three-quarter profile with the eyes lowered and the mouth closed, lit from the front and slightly above so the light catches the brow, the bridge of the nose and the point of the ear before falling away into the dark.
