About this artwork
This is a painting that refuses to hide its own making. The hair is laid down in wide flat slabs of chrome yellow with the ends of the strokes left visible, the background is three or four scrubbed passes of pale grey-blue, and whole areas of the face are a single unblended mark. Only the eyes and the mouth have been taken to a finish.
The head fills almost the entire frame and is turned very slightly toward us, hair blown forward across the brow with one long strand cutting down over the far eye. The eyes are green under a cool shadow, the lips a hot orange-red, and the ears come to long fine points that are among the sharpest edges in the picture.
Across the throat and chest, drawn in thin gold line that floats on top of the paint rather than sitting in it, are a numeral thirty and, beneath it in a light cursive hand, the name of the series. It is an anniversary piece and it says so quietly.
The clothing is barely there: three or four turquoise and blue marks at the shoulders with a gold cord laid across them, enough to place the figure and no more. Part of our Zelda collection, alongside the green poster of many Link incarnations for the other piece here built around the length of a history.
