Zelda in a Feathered Hood Amid Smoke — Print & Oil Painting

The whole canvas sits at the pale end of the scale, cream and dust-rose and ash grey, with the texture of old spotted paper showing through every passage. It reads less as a painting than as a print pulled from a worn plate.

She wears a hood of overlapping cream feathers pulled well forward, so the face is caught in a soft oval of shadow. Heavy black liner rings the eyes, the brows are drawn in hard straight strokes, and two thick bands of gold-yellow hair fall on either side of the jaw. That yellow is the only strong colour anywhere on the figure.

Below the collar the body stops being a body. Dark grey plumage spreads outward in two wide arcs and thins into charcoal smoke at the edges, with rose and rust bleeding upward through the middle of it. Nothing in the lower half is anatomically resolved, and it is plainly not meant to be.

Two things float over everything else: a large pale disc behind her right shoulder, and several dozen small black rectangles scattered across the full height of the canvas at slightly different angles, like flecks of ash caught mid-fall or scraps of paper laid on the surface.
