Zelda Cradles a Wounded Link, Foreheads Touching — Print & Oil Painting

The picture is deliberately overexposed. The background is blown out to near-white and the two heads sit inside that glare, which sends everything at the edges of the frame soft: dark helmeted shapes crowd the lower and far right entirely out of focus, and a pale armoured figure stands blurred at the upper left.

In the middle sits the only sharp thing in the image. She has him gathered against her, one hand under his jaw and one flat on his chest, and their foreheads are pressed together with both pairs of eyes closed. Her mouth is open on something between a breath and a word. A wet line runs down her cheek.

He is in white and pale steel with a red cloth at the throat, and the white is where the story gets told: small dark red flecks are scattered across the plate, the glove and the ground beneath him, few in number and impossible to miss against all that light.

Blue petals fall through the whole frame at different depths and different degrees of blur, the only cool colour in a canvas otherwise made of cream, gold and skin. Part of our Zelda collection. Link cradling a wounded Zelda in the dark reverses these two roles exactly, and Link and Zelda resting together under a big tree shows the pair with nothing wrong at all.
